Old Fashioned: The first recorded definition of the word “cocktail” appears in the 13 May 1806, Hudson, New York, Balance, and Columbian Repository: “A stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters.” In other words, omit the garnish and let the ice melt and there you have it…an Old Fashioned. The original cocktail!
Sazerac: Dating back to the mid 19th century, the Sazerac is New Orleans’ hometown drink. It’s made with the “old fashioned” cocktail ingredients…alcohol, sugar, water, and bitters, and could have been ordered in any latter 19th century bar in the U.S. as a whiskey cocktail with a dash of absinthe.
Whiskey Sour: The Whiskey Sour is a classic “Sour” cocktail, comprising only a few basic ingredients: bourbon or rye whiskey for the base, lemon juice to provide structure, and simple syrup for balance and texture. For an added frothy/creamy texture add egg white.
